Garlic Butter Steak

Ingredients

for 2 servings
  • 1 ribeye steak, 2 inch, 5 cm thick, preferably USDA Prime
  • salt, to taste
  • pepper, to taste
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 3 sprigs fresh thyme

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 200°F (95°C).
  2. Generously season all sides of the steak with salt and pepper.
  3. Transfer to a wire rack on top of a baking sheet, then bake for about 45 minutes to an hour until the internal temperature reads about 125°F (51° C) for medium-rare. Adjust the bake time based on if you like your steak more rare or more well-done (you monster).
  4. Heat the canola oil in a pan over high heat until smoking. Do not use olive oil, as its smoke point is significantly lower than that of canola oil and will smoke before reaching the desired cooking temperature.
  5. Sear the steak for 30 seconds on the first side, then flip.
  6. Add the butter, garlic, rosemary, and thyme and swirl around the pan.
  7. Transfer the garlic and herbs on top of the steak and baste the steak with the butter using a large spoon.
  8. Baste for about 30 seconds, then flip and baste the other side for about 15 seconds.
  9. Turn the steak on its side and cook to render off any excess fat.
  10. Rest the steak on a cutting board or wire rack for about 10 minutes. Slicing the steak before the resting period has finished will result in a lot of the juices leaking out, which may not be desirable.
  11. Slice the steak into ½ -inch (1 ½ cm) strips, then fan out the slices and serve.
  12. Enjoy!

Why Love Is Worth The Risk

When you’ve had your heart tampered with so many times before, it’s hard to believe someone’s intentions are good when they tell you pretty words and do nice things for you and ask for your heart in return. For some reason, it just gets hard to believe that this person might actually stick around when a parade full of others have seen their way out the door.

No matter if it’s different people over the course of the time who each had their own way of hurting you, or one person who broke your entire heart in whole, effortlessly. In either case, your heart was still broken, and with that, the innocence of your young heart was stripped away at the moment that your heart was briefly stolen. When something like that happens, you become conditioned to think it will happen again. It’s hard to let someone in when you’ve got chains wrapped so tightly around your heart.

But here’s the thing, love doesn’t come around very often. Love comes around once in a blue moon.

My advice to you is if there’s someone who’s offering their love to you and who makes your heart happy, maybe it’s worth the risk of trusting it for once. Allowing yourself to love again is an uphill battle and a constant question of bravery, but if you never let your walls down then you’ll just never know. Here’s the shocking line that not all of us take time to realize; love doesn’t always have to leave you hurting. Beautiful things can happen if you allow them to.

13 Things to Remember When Life Gets Rough

We’ve all gone through hard times. And we all get through them. However, some get through them better than others. So what is their secret? Most of it has to do with attitude. Here are 13 things to remember when life gets rough:
1. What is, is. Buddha’s famous saying tells us: “It is your resistance to ‘what is’ that causes your suffering.” Think about that for a minute. It means that our suffering only occurs when we resist how things are. If you can change something, then take action! Change it! But if you can’t change it, then you have two choices: (1) either accept it and let go of the negativity, or (2) make yourself miserable by obsessing over it.
2. It’s only a problem if you think it’s a problem. Many times, we are our own worst enemy. Happiness is really dependent on perspective. If you think something is a problem, then your thoughts and emotions will be negative. But if you think it’s something you can learn from, then suddenly, it’s not a problem anymore.
3. If you want things to change, you need to start with changing yourself. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. Don’t you know people whose lives are chaotic and stressful? And isn’t that largely because they feel chaotic inside? Yes, it is. We like to think that changing our circumstances will change us. But we have it backwards—we need to change ourselves first before our circumstances will change.
4. There is no such thing as failure—only learning opportunities. You should just wipe the word “failure” right out of your vocabulary. All great people who have ever achieved anything have “failed” over and over. In fact, I think it was Thomas Edison who said something like, “I did not fail at inventing the light bulb, I just first found 99 ways that it didn’t work.” Take your so-called “failures” and learn something from them. Learn how to do it better next time.
5. If you don’t get something you want, it just means something better is coming. That’s hard to believe sometimes, I know. But it’s true. Usually, when you look back at your life, you will be able to see why it was actually a good thing that something didn’t work out. Maybe the job you didn’t get would have made you spend more time away from your family, but the job you did get was more flexible. Just have faith that everything happens exactly the way it’s supposed to.
6. Appreciate the present moment. This moment will never come again. And there is always something precious about every moment. So don’t let it pass you by! Soon it will just be a memory. Even moments that don’t seem happy can be looked upon as something that you might miss someday. As the country song by Trace Adkins says, “You’re gonna miss this…you’re gonna want this back. You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast….you may not know this now, but you’re gonna miss this…”
7. Let go of desire. Most people live with “attached mind.” What this means is that they attach themselves to a desire, and when they don’t get it, their emotions plummet into negativity. Instead, try to practice “detached mind.” That means that when you want something, you will still be happy whether you get it or not. Your emotions remain happy or neutral.
8. Understand and be grateful for your fears. Fear can be a great teacher. And overcoming fears can also make you feel victorious. For example, when I was in college, I feared public speaking (one of the top 3 fears of all humans). So I find it humorous now that not only do I speak in front of a group every day by being a college professor, I also teach public speaking! Overcoming fears just takes practice. Fear is really just an illusion. It’s optional.
9. Allow yourself to experience joy. Believe it or not, I know way too many people who don’t allow themselves to have fun. And they don’t even know how to be happy. Some people are actually addicted to their problems and the chaos in them so much that they wouldn’t even know who they are without them. So try to allow yourself to be happy! Even if it’s just for a small moment, it’s important to focus on joy, not your hardships.
10. Don’t compare yourself to other people. But if you do compare yourself, compare yourself with people who have it worse than you. Unemployed? Be grateful that you live in a country that gives unemployment compensation, because most people in the world live on less that $750 a year. So you don’t look like Angelina Jolie? Well, I bet there are more people who don’t than do. And you are probably way better looking than most people. Focus on that.
11. You are not a victim. You need to get out of your own way. You are only a “victim” of your own thoughts, words and actions. No one “does” something to you. You are the creator of your own experience. Take personal responsibility and realize that you can get out of your hard times. You just need to start with changing your thoughts and actions. Abandon your victim mentality and become victorious. From victim to VICTOR!
12. Things can—and do—change. “And this too shall pass” is one of my favorite sayings. When we are stuck in a bad situation, we think that there is no way out. We think nothing will ever change. But guess what? It will! Nothing is permanent except death. So get out of the habit of thinking that things will always be this way. They won’t. But you do need to take some sort of action for things to change. It won’t magically happen all on its own.
13. Anything is possible. Miracles happen every day. Really—they do. I wish I had enough space to write about all the miraculous things that have happened to people I know—from healing stage 4 cancer naturally to having their soul mate appear out of nowhere. Trust me: it happens all the time. You just need to believe it does. Once you do, you have won the battle. Source: Life hack

The Spiritually (Sometimes Not so Comfortable) Healing Nature of Relationships

“When two people go deeply into a relationship, it is guaranteed that at a certain point, they will trigger each other’s deepest wounds and sore points.”
Warning: f-bombs ahead.

Once in a workshop, a woman asked us if her longing to be in deep and intimate relationships was co-dependent.

I answered that there is never a problem with longing; our longing to be in a deep, intimate, sustained sharing with someone is natural and healthy. The problem is that the longing often lacks consciousness.
Most often, we enter our relationships full of fantasies and naivetĆ©, like adolescents. And often, the beginning of a relationship is a wonderful time. But it is also a dream state. Sooner or later, problems arise and when they do, we naturally think that the problem lies with ourselves, with the other person, or with the relationship. Then we may move on, or become depressed and give up on the possibility of love. Or perhaps even worse, we remain in the relationship, even for years as the love dies and the energy goes flat or turns nasty.
We may not realize that love takes deep work and awareness of ourselves. It takes awareness that relating deeply with another person will bring up deep unconscious issues. We are not born knowing how to love. We are born knowing how to have sex and how to be spontaneous and alive. But turning aliveness and attraction into love is a totally different story.

THERE ARE FOUR MAJOR AREAS WHERE MORE UNDERSTANDING CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISASTER OR DEEPENING LOVE.

The first involves an understanding that initially we relate to the world and to others much like a child with dreams and expectations. That child consciousness needs to be transformed into mature consciousness.
The second involves a more profound understanding for the nature of attraction, and how and why dramas develop the longer we are with someone in any form of intimate relationship.
The third involves understanding how and why our sexuality changes as we go deeper in a love relationship.
The fourth involves understanding the roles that nearly always develop between lovers (and friends) as time goes on.
Most of us naturally have ideas how people should behave and how the world should be. We hope and even expect that we will be treated in a certain way, especially when we open and allow ourselves to be vulnerable. This is the entitled child inside of us. When someone close to us does not treat us in a way which feels respectful, loving, attentive and generous, we feel betrayed and our trust with that person gets frayed. Relationship, any deep relationship, is going to challenge us to drop our entitled child and come to terms with how people and life really are.
In a relationship, there are going to be times when we feel abandoned, disrespected, ignored, not considered, not listened to, pressured and perhaps even abused. These are times when we have important lessons to learn about life; lessons which empower us and help us to grow up.
For instance, there are times when we have to accept the other person the way he or she is and feel the pain of that. Other times, we have to set clear limits and express our hurt or anger if we feel treated in a way which is disrespectful. Other times, we have to follow our life energy even if it causes discomfort or fear in the other person rather than compromise for harmony. Learning acceptance, setting limits, finding the courage to live our life is empowering. Staying in the entitled child trait, hoping that the other person changes and becoming resentful when they are not as we wantthem to be, is depressing and stressful.

WHEN TWO PEOPLE GO DEEPLY INTO A RELATIONSHIP, IT IS GUARANTEED THAT AT A CERTAIN POINT, THEY WILL TRIGGER EACH OTHER’S DEEPEST WOUNDS AND SORE POINTS.

This is actually the sign of a good relationship, a real relationship. One person’s behavior will push the other person’s deepest buttons and vice versa. But at that point, each person sees the other as a “monster” who cannot be trusted, who has to be guarded against, who is abusive or insensitive or inconsiderate or selfish, and who needs to change in order for the relationship to work.
The wound which the other person is provoking, always has its origin in some deep primal wound. And even if we are aware and have worked on this wound, when our loved one provokes it, we no longer see the other person. What we see unconsciously is an abusive or unresponsive or inattentive parent or authority figure from our past. We cannot understand how the other person can be so blind as not to see and understand our pain and sensitivity in this area. What follows in these moments is drama, conflict, hurt, misunderstandings, endless discussion, anger and then deeper mistrust and alienation.
When we understand that this is the true nature of attraction, we can be prepared for conflict or discomfort. We can even welcome it, even when it hurts. But we also need a way to work through these situations.
Our experience is that if each person becomes aware of his or her own particular sore points and can recognize when the other person triggers them, we can begin to share more consciously. For instance, if we have had a controlling or overbearing parent, we can know that most likely, we are going to get triggered by a strong mate or friend. We are going to get triggered when we feel controlled, supervised, criticized or patronized. The other person becomes a monster and we become angry, shocked or some combination of both.
On the other side, we may have had a parent who was irresponsible and collapsed. We may find ourselves in a relationship with someone who has a tendency to go into shock, space out and even “fuck up” when he or she feels stressed. But whenever we feel the other person is not being responsible or present, we feel betrayed and abandoned.
Once we know our source wound—in other words, once we know the root of these emotions—we have the awareness to do the necessary inner work and take the energy away from drama and reaction. Our work is to feel and express (when possible) our fear or pain without trying to change the other person. With this understanding, love flows. When we see the other person as the problem and focus our efforts at convincing him or her how dysfunctional they are, love dies.
Many of us long for sexuality which is alive, spontaneous, deep, sensitive and frequent. And often when two persons come together, it starts out that way. The energy is strong, the bodies are alive and open and both people feel as though they are in heaven. But with time, things change. We may become critical or mistrustful of each other, or feel inhibited or simply less interested.
When change sets in, we may even try different techniques to try to bring things back to what they were—holidays, sexual rituals, drugs, porn, or whatever. Nothing wrong with any of that but, in our experience, it misses the basic point.
As two people go deeper in intimacy and vulnerability, long buried fears and insecurities usually arise. When this happens, our sexuality also changes, which is what we call “second level sexuality.”
“First level sexuality”—what we may have enjoyed in the beginning is high energy, orgasm focused, passionate and often contains some degree of compensation for shame, inadequacies, and insecurities. It may mask fears connected to our sense of self, our sexuality and also offers some degree of cover for feelings of deep inner loneliness.
In “second level sex,” our shame and fear is surfacing and we can no longer hide it or run away from it.
Moving from level one to level two is healthy and growth inducing, because it invites us to know ourselves in a deeper way. It is the road to deeper intimacy. But we may miss the uncomplicated sexual high of level one. And we may also not understand or know how to communicate when fears and insecurities arise in love making. Often, we may not even be aware that we are afraid or in shame, but our body knows and will fail to respond or function the way we would like. Men may come fast or can’t get an erection; women may have difficulties with orgasm or other problems.
If we know that this stage is most likely going to happen, if we decide to be more open with someone and treat it as an opportunity to deepen our love and, we can use this development in a positive way. But it is a challenge because to recognize and to share our fears and shame around sex is difficult. For this to happen, we have to be willing to let go of our addiction to level one sex. That is also not easy.

SEX CAN BE ONE OF THE MOST FAVORED WAYS OF AVOIDING DEEP INNER SPACES. IT CAN BE JUST LIKE A DRUG AND WHEN FEARS AND INSECURITIES ARISE, WE CAN EASILY GET FRUSTRATED AND BLAME THE OTHER PERSON OR OURSELVES FOR THE LOSS OF ENERGY.

In our experience, in any relationship, both people mirror each other’s state of fear, shame and dysfunction. It usually shows itself in different ways and also one person may be more successful in his or her compensations, but deep down, the wounds are equal in strength.
When we can begin to accept and even share our fears and insecurities in this area, trust grows. As trust grows and as we become more comfortable at accepting and sharing our fears and shame, we enter into what we call “third level sex.”
In this level, the emphasis is clearly on connection rather than on the sexual high. There is a foundation of deep love and trust and there is space to handle whatever comes up in sex. At this point, orgasm and high energy can happen or not, or the sexuality can be more silent and non-active, dysfunction can happen or not, it doesn’t matter. It is the love and connection that matters and there is a willingness to go through whatever it takes to deepen that.
A final area of understanding that adds consciousness to longing is in the area of the different roles people get into, the longer they are in relationship. It happens very often that one person takes on the role as the caretaking parent, while the other person becomes a regressed child.
As a caretaking parent, we can either be giving or rejecting depending on our nature and our mood.
As a child, we can alternate between being obedient and well behaved or rebellious, again depending on our mood and nature.
This situation usually happens totally unconsciously and automatically. But unless these roles are brought to consciousness, they can destroy a relationship.
Many of us long to get the love and caring that we missed as a child and when we enter into relationship as an adult, we carry this longing with us.
It can show itself by our becoming self-centered, demanding, lazy, spoiled, pouting, moody or irresponsible. All of this behavior is a cover for deep inner feelings of shame, loneliness and fear which need to be felt. When we play the role of the parent, we are also using that role to cover our shame and fear. It may give us some ego fulfillment because we feel needed and useful, but it is essentially an avoidance and breeds resentment and suffering.
This kind of bonding, as it is called, can be a love killer.
It is exhausting to be responsible for another person and it is demeaning and humiliating to feel and behave like a child. In our experience, most relationships become bonded to some extent because we have these tendencies inside of us. But if we can notice them as they arise and begin to watch and feel as we play these roles, it makes all the difference.
With this kind of awareness, we develop the power to choose not to play into them. And when we know that the survival of our love depends on being conscious of these roles, we are motivated to confront them.
There are other aspects of our learning how to love, but these are four of the most important ones. Relationship is a constant challenge to learn to know and love ourselves. It is an arena where we can grow because our longing to have and share love is so strong.
To bring love into our lives, we need to deepen our consciousness. To find and sustain love, we have constant work to do, understandings to acquire and feelings to move through. It’s our experience that when two people want to keep their love alive, there are continual challenges. There is much to learn about ourselves and there is no better place to learn it.

14 Ways To Raise The Vibration Of Your Home

We cleanse our home energetically in order to welcome good, high vibration energy into your space, and clear away any negative vibes. This way, not only are our bodies vibin’ high and in total alignment with our dreams, but so is our home.
A home filled with good vibes brings on better conversation, meditation, cooking, working, creativity and so much more. There will be less fights, misunderstandings, arguments and sadness. The place you spend most of your time should be a space you want to spend time in, and create beautiful things.
Feel the energy, love your space, sink into its bliss!

1. BURN SAGE

Burning smudge sticks made from sage, or any other purifying herb, like lavender, or sweet grass is energetically purifying to the home. Burning sage clears any unwanted energies out of the room, and welcomes high vibration, good energy in its place. After an argument or fight, it’s a great idea to burn sage to move that energy out, and move on. Go through each room of your home with a burning smudge stick, waving it in a clockwise motion with thoughts of cleansing and positivity.

2. ASK “DO I REALLY NEED THIS?”

Every few months it’s a great idea to go through your house and think about what things are truly necessary for you to keep. Figure out which of them you can donate, throw away or give to a friend.
As humans we tend to collect way too many items that we will never EVER use. Keeping these things in our homes is only making us cluttered, cramped and overwhelmed. It can be super therapeutic to get rid of the things that no longer serve us. Let go, allow the energetic release… go with it. The items we hold on to could be saying a lot more about us, and you may find a deep message about your self during this release.
Extra tip: you may find it easier to do this during a new moon, where our bodies and mind are releasing and able to let go more easily.

3. PINK HIMALAYAN SALT LAMPS

I absolutely love pink salt, and I use it for all my cooking. But there’s so much more it can do! Crystal lamps give off a sweet glowy vibe that makes you feel good just by looking at it. The pink/orange coloraffects us both physically and emotionally. It gives off a comforting feeling of safeness and security. It’s even said that this light is good for our nervous system, kidneys and bladder.
Salt lamps also give off negative ion particles. Negative ions cling to positive ion particles (which we don’t want) and weigh them down to the ground so that they aren’t floating through our air and putting us out of balance. This is a simple way of energetically cleansing and purifying the air. Good vibes!

4. SINGING AND DANCING

Moving your body with the rhythm of your emotions is healing to the mind and soul. And singing like no one can hear you, with fire and joy, can be such a release. Let the spirit move you!!!! As you swing and howl or scream with passion, you are filling each room with your uplifting, animating vibration.

5. BEESWAX CANDLES

Another way to produce those lovely negative ions is by burning all natural 100% beeswax candles. Beeswax gives of a soothing deep yellow glow. This is stress reducing and puts us in a “feel good” mood. At the same time, negative ions are produced, cleaning the air, and also weighing down allergens and other irritating particles.
Plus, beeswax smells amazing. This is such an inviting aroma, the subtle sweetness of honey is oh so delicious. I could spend hours just gazing at a lit beeswax candle and breathing in its intoxicating aroma. This really soothes the soul.

6. MEDITATE

Having a clean energy in your home enhances meditation. And meditation enhances the energy in your home! So this is a win-win situation. There are countless benefits to this practice, and this inner work seeps into the space around us, too. I can definitely feel this good energy in the home of other meditators, too.
The meditation practice I do is Transcendental Meditation, which is done twice daily – and has quite honestly changed my life. If you think you’re ready to learn, reach out and I can get you in touch with a recommended teacher.

7. DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are one of the best ways to vibe up your space with fresh fragrance and good energy. Each essential oil has its own qualities, and characteristics, and you can choose based on your mood. Sweet orange, lemon and grapefruit are very uplifting and cleansing. Lavender and frankincense will be calming, and good for stress relief and relaxation. You will need an essential oil burner to diffuse these aromas. This is also the secret to having the best smelling house on the block!!

8. GET RID OF CLUTTER

A clean space is a clear mind! Put the little things away, and keep everything in order. To do this the majority of the items in your home should have a designated space. Think about it. If you want to clean your house, but there’s no specific space for the items wandering around, they just end up getting piled up and moved around.
Less clutter means less overwhelm! We don’t want our minds to be any busier than they already are. Create a sense of calm in your home instead.
Extra tip: Take out the trash, and OFTEN! This keeps the air smelling and feeling fresh! If you ever find yourself feeling overwhelmed and stagnant, taking out the trash can help bring some quick relief.

9. PLANTS

Keeping live plants in the home makes it a livelier place! The more life we welcome into our space, the more enjoyable it is, and the more inviting it is to our guests. You want to see that the beings in this space are thriving and full of life, a bright and beautiful splash of green displays this perfectly. This brings me to another point. Be sure to remove those dead plants that are dried up and collecting dust. There’s no room for them in this high vibe and fresh space no mo’! Only fresh and vibrant energy! The oxygen is purifying too.

10. CRYSTALS

Having an array of beautiful and charged crystals in your home ups the good vibes big time. You can charge your crystals to enhance their healing properties by placing them in the sunlight, moonlight or near a lit beeswax candle. They’re alluring to the eye, and each healing in their own ways. Just look at how gorgeous they are! Anything with such beauty and naturally intricate design is sure to bring good energy into the home.

11. BURN NATURAL INCENSE

Burning incense is another lovely way to purify your home, and fill it with a delicious scent to soothe the mind. I love to burn sandalwood, amber and frankincense. Always be sure to buy all natural, hand rolled incense. Never buy anything that smells “perfumey” or artificial, this will only pump chemicals and bad vibes into the home. Keep it pure and buy the good stuff. Prasad Celestial Incense is a brand I LOVE.

12. FRESH FLOWERS

Bringing fresh flowers home to fill the house is so lovely.  It adds a beautiful splash of color to brighten the room, and if they’re aromatic, you’ll be sniffing them in all day, too. Pretty flowers, fresh vibe, these make a welcoming home.

13. OPEN THE WINDOWS AND DOORS

Allow fresh air to fill your home for at least five minutes each day. Let the wind naturally exchange air that has been cooped up with some fresh and vibrant, oxygen filled breeze. Even during winter months this should be done!

14. LISTEN TO VEDIC MANTRAS

The vibrations of these ancient Vedic sounds will enhance the energy in your home and heart. Let these sounds fill your home with their energy of bliss, allow yourself to sink into it.  I will list a few mantras that I believe enhance mood, energy and vibrations. You can find audio or video recordings of these mantras online. You don’t have to know their words or understand their meanings, the vibrations do the work on their own.
